The Ridge Riders of the Black Hills Mountain Bike Club hosted the 9th Annual Dakota Five-0, Sunday September 6, 2009 in Spearfish, SD. 294 riders participated in 2008. The race has continued to grow each year but not the entrance fee. 2008 brought about the all new Bacon Station, where riders were treated to gourmet country bacon, beer, and Twinkies. It was a big hit, and nice addition to the already well supported 50 mile ride. This year the top man and woman will receive a Garmin Edge 705 GPS as well as their cash bonus!!! (courtesy of Quarq)
The Dakota Five-O, lollie-pop loop, begins in Spearfish City Park, and leaves town to the west up Tinton Road. Three miles of gravel road climbing takes you to the flowing, fun single track of Tinton Trail. Seven miles later you will find the first water station at Big Hill Trailhead. After fueling up you'll ride another 12 miles to the second water station at Old Baldy Trailhead. Relax, stretch and continue on Old Baldy for some of the more technical riding through Crangle Connection, and on to the third water station at sheep flats, approximately 30 miles into the race. Are you tired yet? Ride another 8 miles to the last water station at Ball Park where fine, young felines will await you with drinks and treats! Beware of the bear of a climb ahead! And don't forget to stop at Hobo camp for your official on course PBR stop.....don't ask for water! Now you're ready for the Citadel slide, so pucker up your sphincter and give a hoot for your last 10 miles of single track back down Tinton trail, to Spearfish City Park, where music, food, and a cold brew is waiting with your name on it!
